Maui 2023 Wildfire

In August 2023, wildfires ravaged Maui, causing significant damage. The fires affected both local residents and the island’s natural landscapes.

The Fight

Over 13,000 people have been displaced during the Maui Wildfires with over 2,000 buildings destroyed.

The Solution

Family Life Center in partnership with multiple organizations across the community are working to construct a midterm housing solution, ‘Ohana Hope Village.

Interim Housing designed to meet the unmet needs of our community

Ohana Hope Village was designed by Hawaii Off-grid leveraging research-based, trauma-informed design to provide families displaced form the Maui wildfires with a home while they await the rebuilding of permanent housing solutions. The community was designed to also accommodate large or multi-generational families with 4-6 homes (each with their own private bathroom and kitchen) built around a community center with communal laundry facilities, private meeting space, a large kitchen and dining space perfect for those large family gatherings. Sixteen of these Community centers are laid out across the 88-home village.
